Auggies score 3-2 win at St. Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- Tim Serratore (SO, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) and Niklas Almstrom (SO, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) had a goal and assist each for Augsburg College, as the Auggies scored a 3-2 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) also scored for Augsburg (7-10-1 overall, 3-5-1 MIAC). #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Zach Dick (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn.) had assists for the Auggies.

St. Mary's (4-13-1 overall, 1-7-1 MIAC) outshot Augsburg by a 36-25 margin, but Auggie goalie Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 34 saves to pick up the victory. Jason Horstman had 22 saves for St. Mary's.

Augsburg built a 2-0 lead in the first period, as Serratore scored from Almstrom at the 7:55 mark, and Doden scored from McClellan at the 12:49 mark. St. Mary's cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal from Nick Nagel, assisted by Kevin Wentland and Austin Balko, at the 18:46 mark of the first period.

Augsburg took a 3-1 lead 53 seconds into the second period, as Almstrom scored from Dick and Serratore. Kevin Wentland cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal from Balko at the 15:22 mark of the third period, but the Cardinals could not tie the game in the final minutes.

The teams will complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/28) at 7:05 p.m. at Augsburg's Ed Saugestad Rink.
