Rachel Hennessy (FY, Williston, N.D.) and
Sara Rajewsky (FY, Murdock, Minn./Benson HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but three third-period goals gave St. Mary's University a 5-2 victory over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Rajewsky had a goal and assist for Augsburg (5-7-4 overall, 2-7-0 MIAC), notching her fourth goal of the season on the power play at the 7:01 mark of the third period, tying the game at 2-2.
But St. Mary's (5-8-3 overall, 2-5-2 MIAC) scored three straight goals, including two goals in the final 1:16 of play, to secure the win. Breanna Peterson (FY, Macomb, Mich.) had a goal and two assists for the Cardinals, while Haley Coolsaet (SO, Grosse Island, Mich.) and Mary DeBartolo (FY, Chicago, Ill.) had a goal and assist each. Heidi Martin (SO, Ankeny, Iowa/Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) and Nicole Olson (SR, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) also scored for the Cardinals.
Hennessy scored her 16th goal of the season on an even-strength marker from Rajewsky at the 12:38 mark of the first period. Hennessy's 16 goals are currently the second-most among NCAA Division III women's hockey players nationally, and her 1.00 goals-per-game average is second-best among Division III players. She is second to Norwich (Vt.) senior Julie Fortier, who has 18 goals so far this season. Hennessy's 16 goals lead the MIAC in overall statistics through Friday's games, and her 20 points (16 goals, four assists) are fourth-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.
St. Mary's tied the game with Peterson's goal from Coolsaet and DeBartolo with 32 seconds left in the first period, and took a 2-1 lead with Martin's goal, assisted by Sheree Haslemore (SR, Gore, New Zealand), with 54 seconds left in the second period.
Rajewsky tied the game at 2-2 with her power-play goal from
Jessica Larkin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and
Kendall Christian (FY, Moorhead, Minn.). Olson put the Cardinals ahead to stay with a goal at the 11:06 mark of the final frame, assisted by Erin Stenseth (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North HS) and Brittany Therrien (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.), and Coolsaet's and DeBartolo's goals, both assisted by Peterson, capped the scoring.
St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 34-25 margin. Sarah Gustafson (SO, Esko, Minn.) had 23 saves in goal for St. Mary's, while
Brianna Schulz (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 29 saves for Augsburg, with
Crystal Amunrud (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.) playing the final minute in goal for the Auggies.
