Doden's hat trick nets Auggie OT win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) claimed his first collegiate hat trick, scoring the game-winning goal 2:34 into overtime to give the Augsburg College men's hockey team a 5-4 victory over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Doden scored the Auggies' last three goals, as Augsburg (8-10-1 overall, 4-5-1 MIAC) rallied from a 3-1 second-period deficit to St. Mary's (4-14-1 overall, 1-8-1 MIAC) to claim the weekend series sweep.

Doden now has a team-high 13 goals on the season, a total that is currently tied for the most goals among MIAC players in overall statistics. He scored on a power-play goal at the 16:32 mark of the second period, then tied the game with a goal at the 16:16 mark of the third period to force overtime before scoring an unassisted goal for the game-winner.

Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) also scored goals for Augsburg. McClellan added an assist for a two-point night, and David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) had two assists.

Bob Marx (FY, Sioux City, Iowa) scored two goals to lead St. Mary's, with Ryan Griffiths (SO, Arvada, Colo.) and Kevin Wentland (JR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) also scoring.

Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 45-35 margin in the game. Auggie goalie Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice had 31 saves, while Cardinal goalie Andy Scheib (JR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) had 40 saves.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 first-period lead, as Griffiths scored an unassisted goal at the 6:46 mark, and Wentland scored from Jed McGlasson (FY, Kenai, Alaska) and Bobby Thompson (SO, Centerville, Minn.) at the 10:59 mark.

All three Augsburg goals in the second period came on the power play. McClellan scored from Scott Eberline (SO, Novi, Mich.) and Hines at the 6:51 mark, and after Marx scored from Andrew Ketterer (JR, Peoria, Ill.) at the 11:27 mark -- also on the power play -- the Auggies scored twice on a 5-on-3 advantage. Paine scored from Landon Olson (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and Daniel Hildebrandt (FY, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) at the 15:30 mark, and Doden scored from McClellan and Hines 62 seconds later.

Marx scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Tommy Healy (SR, Rolling Meadows, Ill.), at the 17:36 mark of the second period to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead. Doden tied the game in the third period, assisted by #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Erik Ordahl (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS).

Both teams are back in MIAC play next weekend, with Augsburg facing St. Olaf and St. Mary's hosting St. John's. Augsburg hosts St. Olaf next Friday (2/3) at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and travels to Northfield, Minn., to take on the Oles next Saturday (2/4) at 7:30 p.m.
