Auggies top St. Scholastica 3-2

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. -- Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) scored two goals to give him a team-high eight on the year, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference contest on Saturday evening at the Rosemount Community Center Ice Arena.

Doden tied the game at 1-1 with a goal at the 13:13 mark of the second period, and added an empty-net goal with 1:31 remaining in the contest. John Lennartson (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) scored his fifth goal in a four-game span, putting the Auggies ahead for good with a power-play goal with 2:53 left in the game.

Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) stopped 34 shots in goal for Augsburg (5-8-0 overall). Both teams had 36 shots-on-goal in the game, with Augsburg holding a 29-22 advantage in the final two periods. Colin Rundell (SO, Tees, Alberta) had 33 saves in goal for St. Scholastica (7-5-2 overall).

The Saints scored the game's opening goal at the 16:52 mark of the first period, when Matt Malenstyn (FY, Surrey, British Columbia) scored a power-play goal from Brenden Bradbury (JR, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Chad Golanowski (SO, Calgary, Alberta).

Doden tied the game with his seventh goal of the season in the second period, scoring from Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) and David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS).

The final 2:53 of the game featured three goals. Lennartson scored in a scramble in front of the net, assisted by Brandon Bukowski (SR, Superior, Wis.) and Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) at the 17:07 mark. Doden then put home an empty-net goal at the 18:29 mark, assisted by McClellan and Erik Ordahl (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS).

St. Scholastica scored with 22 seconds remaining with an extra attacker, as Brandon Nowakowski (SO, Calgary, Alberta) scored from Bradbury and Carter Davis (SR, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan).

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, travelling to Moorhead, Minn., for a series against Concordia-Moorhead. Next Friday's (1/13) game is at 7 p.m., and next Saturday's (1/14) game is at 2 p.m.
