BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gustavus Adolphus College men's soccer team scored the lone goal with 3:29 left in the game, claiming a 1-0 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Gabe Steinborn (SR, Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS) scored on a header off a corner kick by David Lilly (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 87th minute for the Gusties (10-2-1 overall, 6-1-1 MIAC). Augsburg drops to 8-5-2 overall, 3-3-1 in MIAC play.
"The goal came from their only real attack in the second half," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "We had them pinned in, but they slammed one long down the line and got a corner out of it. The service on the corner from Lilly was fantastic and Gabe flashed in front of our player and headed it in for the win. It was a well taken set piece -- they have scored a lot of dead-ball goals this year to get their points, and in our league you have to win that battle."
Augsburg came close to taking the lead with 26 minutes left in the second half, as
Chad Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) appeared to fire the ball off a rebound into the net, but play had been stopped and the goal was disallowed.
""In the second half, we scored a great goal that was called back and there was some uncertainty about what happened for sure. We peppered (Gustavus goalkeeper Brett) Ylonen (SO, Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater HS) throughout the match, but absolutely hammered that goal in the second half and he made four massive saves. Credit to him for keeping his team in the game."
Augsburg outshot Gustavus by an 18-16 margin, including an 11-6 advantage in the second half. Ylonen came up with four saves to claim the shutout win, while
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had five saves for Augsburg.
"We used a makeshift back four in the game, and kept patching it together as different players got injured," Holker said. "Chad (Gilmer) was taking his GRE for grad school and didn't arrive until the game was 25 minutes gone.
Casey Powell (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) filled in for
Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) when his chin was torn open, and then
Sam Foy (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison LaFollette HS) went down and Heaps had to play centerback.
Josh Sweeney (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) ended up at left back after Casey got injured. All in all, with that group of guys filling in they did a pretty good job. They kept Zach Brown (SO, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) off the board and without a real threatening chance -- I was very pleased with that."
Gilmer had six shots in the game, including three on goal.
Sherif Soud (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) had three shots, and Sweeney and
Tyler Heaps (SR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) had two shots each.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next Saturday (10/20) at 1 p.m. with a game at Hamline University.
"This loss puts us on the outside of the (MIAC) playoff picture," Holker said. "Usually 19 points gets you in, but this year it will likely require more than 20. Our only chance is to gain maximum points from our next three opponents and hope for some help along the way."
