BOXSCORE ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- With four different players scoring goals and 22 players seeing action, the Augsburg College men's soccer team scored a 4-0 victory over Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
Augsburg (8-3-1 overall) outshot Northwestern (5-5-1 overall) by a 12-3 margin, including a 7-1 advantage in the second half, when the Auggies scored three goals. Augsburg also held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks in the game.
"Getting a shutout was important for us," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "We haven't had that many this season and need to keep opponents out if we want to have success in the heart of our MIAC season."
Grant Griffin (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) opened the scoring in the 20th minute, scoring from
Ryan Schlittler (JR, Eagan, Minn.). Augsburg then scored three goals in a 10-minute span in the second half --
Lekpea Kordah (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored an unassisted goal in the 69th minute,
Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored from
Chad Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) in the 75th minute and
Mohamed Sankoh (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.
"
Sam Connor (FY, Becket, Mass./Williston Northampton School) was sharp today," Holker said. "I thought he read the game very well and helped us lock them in their half for good portions of the match.
Grant Griffin was busy and effective on the flank and he now has his first two collegiate goals in back-to-back games.
Sherif Soud (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) played well again in stretches and helped set up Schlittler's service on Grant's goal."
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) collected one save in goal to score the shutout victory. Shane Coleman had four saves in 79 minutes of work, with Eric Bocan recording one save in relief for Northwestern.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (10/6) at 1 p.m. with a key game at Carleton.
"Now we have to concentrate on how to stop Carleton's high powered attack, led by their first-year Brandon McGarrity," Holker said. "Fortunately, we have had some success at Bell Field in recent years, but this will be a stiff test as they just blasted a very good Gustavus team 3-0 on Saturday."
