BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Jeremy Hish (FY, Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) scored two goals in a 93-second span in the second half, part of an Augsburg College 5-0 men's soccer victory over host Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Paterson Field.
Scott Clinton (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS),
Mohamed Sankoh (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and
Aniekan Akpan (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) also scored goals for Augsburg (9-5-2 overall, 4-3-1 MIAC), and
Tyler Heaps (SR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) had two assists.
Hish scored his first collegiate goal at the 65:28 mark, assisted by Heaps, then scored his second goal at the 67:01 mark, assisted by
Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS).
"
Jeremy Hish was tremendous today, and almost had the hat trick when he rattled one off the crossbar from 25 yards out. He had already headed two goals home, including a spectacular piece of play from Heaps and
Sam Connor (FY, Becket, Mass./Willston Northampton School) that set up the goal from the penalty spot," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Heaps had a good day. He was involved in the goals and he was the organizer in the back."
Augsburg built a 2-0 first-half lead, as Clinton scored his fifth goal of the season from Heaps in the 17th minute, and Sankoh scored his first goal of the year on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute. Akpan capped the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 75th minute, assisted by
Lekpea Kordah (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS). In all, 19 players saw game action for the Auggies on Saturday.
"We were able to get a lot of players in, and those minutes will be valuable as we close out this campaign and move forward," Holker said. "I thought
Charlie Leslie (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) made some strong contributions, and
Aniekan Akpan recorded his first collegiate goal. Clinton and Sankoh did what our center forwards are supposed to do by each figuring in on the score sheet. It's definitely promising seeing some of the contributions from the younger guys."
Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 13-6 margin, with goalkeeper
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) picking up the shutout victory with a two-save effort. Eric Feil had two saves in 69 minutes for Hamline, with Derrick Mora recording two saves in relief.
"Without
Clayton Lynch, we would have been behind in that game in the first five minutes," Holker said. "He then robbed a Hamline player who had mysteriously gotten 10 yards clear of our backs onside for a breakaway toward the end of the half. These saves have become something the guys expect now they happen so frequently. He's been top-notch all season."
With the victory, Augsburg remains in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs as the regular season enters its final week. Augsburg will travel to face Concordia-Moorhead on Tuesday (10/23) at 3:30 p.m.
"We will have to tighten up a bit with our pressure on Tuesday, as Concordia can combine around us to score. They do very well to protect leads so it will be important to score first, especially off the long travel," Holker said.
