Auggies top Cobbers 3-2

BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Scott Clinton (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left in the second half, lifting the Augsburg College men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over host Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.

Clinton scored from Sherif Soud (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) at the 89:42 mark for Augsburg (10-5-2 overall, 5-3-1 MIAC), which rallied from a 2-1 first-half deficit with two second-half goals. The 10th win of the season marked the third year in a row, and sixth time in the past seven seasons, that Augsburg has claimed double-digit victories in a campaign.

"Scott's goal was opportunistic. We had several chances in the second half, but just couldn't sneak it in," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "(Concordia goalkeeper Peter) Runquist slipped on a punt and Sherif headed it right to Scott, who from 45 yards out beat Runquist over the top with 18 seconds to play. Big time moment, and well earned by Scott as his effort was tremendous on the day. Paired with Mohamed Sankoh (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS), there were some incredible moments in attack. Mo is on the top of his game right now."

Sankoh assisted on the game-tying goal, scored by Tanner McCarthy (SO, Windsor Heights, Iowa/Dowling Catholic HS) in the 49th minute. Chad Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Tyler Heaps (SR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) in the 28th minute.

"Chad was able to jump over the outstretched arms of Runquist and head home. His ability to get off the ground is insane, and Heaps knew exactly where to put it," Holker said.

Making his first collegiate start in goal, Jeb Bates (JR, Parker, Colo./Chaparral HS) collected four saves to earn the victory for the Auggies. Bates was pressed into action for Tuesday's game after starting goalkeeper Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) was injured during a team practice.

"'King Jeb' gets the win in his only collegiate soccer game," Holker said. "As soon as Lynch went down in training with his dislocated ankle, we were out of options. I called Jeb, who was studying in the library, and we quickly made arrangements for him to join us on the long road trip. He is no stranger to the program though, as we recruited him four years ago and he spent two seasons training with our team. We are grateful he was able to come back and help us out."

Michael Forston scored two goals for Concordia (6-11-0 overall, 3-6-0 MIAC) in a 2:38 span, scoring from Sam Rydell at the 29:52 mark and from Kristian Reiersgord at the 32:30 mark. Runquist had five saves in goal for Concordia, which was outshot by a 15-11 margin by Augsburg.

Holker also praised the play of defender #O.P. Marcellino# (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), who was playing in his final game as an Auggie.

"I thought O.P. did very well in his last game as an Auggie," Holker said. "He brought a tenacious attitude out there and dominated the middle of the park. His contributions have been fantastic throughout his career and he will be missed on Saturday."

Augsburg closes its regular season with a home game against St. Mary's on Saturday (9/27) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

"Now we have to dig up another goalkeeper for Saturday's game versus St. Mary's," Holker said. "That game is a final send off for our seniors and another chance for some of our younger players to gain experience."
