BLAINE, Minn. --
Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) claimed 30 saves in goal, but his Augsburg College men's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of St. Thomas in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Friday evening at Fogerty Arena.
St. Thomas claimed a 33-16 advantage in shots-on-goal in the season-opening game for both teams.
Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had four shots-on-goal for Augsburg, while
Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth (Minn.) Marshall HS) had three shots and
Niklas Almstrom (JR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) had two shots.
Augsburg stayed close to St. Thomas for most of the game, with Brandon Bahnemann's goal 7:53 into the game, assisted by Derek Jacobson, the lone goal through the first two periods. But the Tommies scored twice in a 18-second span in the third period to expand the lead, with Nick Nielsen scoring from Connor McBride at the 8:13 mark and Alex Altenbernd scoring from Travis Baker at the 8:31 mark.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (10/27) at 4 p.m. at the MIAC Showcase, facing St. Olaf at Fogerty Arena.
