McClellans figure big in Auggie win

BOXSCORE BLAINE, Minn. -- The McClellan brothers figured in all three goals for the Augsburg College men's hockey team on Saturday, as the Auggies claimed a 3-2 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase game at Fogerty Arena.

#B.J. McClellan# (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored two goals and had an assist, and Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored a goal for Augsburg, now 1-1-0 overall.

B.J. McClellan opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal from Landon Olson (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) just 1:36 into the game, but St. Olaf tied the game with a power-play goal by Dan Cecka, assisted by Geoff Gieni, at the 4:02 mark of the second period.

Augsburg took the lead to stay midway through the third period, scoring two shorthanded goals in a 25-second span. Ben McClellan scored from B.J. McClellan at the 11:56 mark, and B.J. McClellan scored an unassisted goal at the 12:21 mark. St. Olaf cut into the lead at the 16:33 mark of the third period, as Jeff Harris scored from Bryan Glynn.

Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 40-35 margin. Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 33 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Steve Papciak had 37 saves in goal for St. Olaf.

Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) had 11 shots-on-goal for Augsburg, while Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) had six shots and Daniel Hildebrandt (SO, Monument, Colo./Pine Creek HS) had five shots.

Augsburg returns to action next weekend with a nonconference set of games at Ed Saugestad Rink, hosting St. Norbert (Wis.) next Friday (11/2) at 8 p.m., and hosting Wisconsin-Stevens Point next Saturday (11/3) at 7:05 p.m.
