BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) tied the game with a goal in the 77th minute, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-1 tie in two overtimes with host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Bell Field.
Osip scored on a header into the left corner of the goal off an assist by
Scott Clinton (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) in the 77th minute for Augsburg (8-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC), tying the game at 1-1.
"
Danny Osip was as convinced as I have ever seen him on the goal," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Scott provided great service, but Danny absolutely attacked the free kick, hammering it into the back of the net."
Carleton (9-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 MIAC), the No. 16-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll, scored first when Neil Bartholomay scored off a corner kick in the 58th minute.
"This was a bit of a stalemate -- definitely a fair result," Holker said. "Overall, our backs did a good job keeping McGarrity away from the goal. He is an incredible talent up top, reminding me a bit of St. Olaf alum Kevin Jensen."
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) claimed five saves in goal for Augsburg, while Keenan Smith had five saves in goal for Carleton.
"It was tough to lose
Sam Foy (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison LaFollette HS) so early in the game to injury, but
Sam Connor (FY, Becket, Mass./Williston Northampton School replaced him and played very well in a spot he has never played," Holker said. "Credit to him for being able to adapt and make a difference so quickly. Both of those first-years have been instrumental in this team and we will need them healthy moving forward."
Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 16-13 margin and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (10/10) at 7:30 p.m., hosting St. Olaf at Edor Nelson Field.
"A point on the road is OK in this league, but now we face an explosive and very talented St. Olaf team at home Wednesday night," Holker said. "We want more than a point."
