Derek Loisel (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) claimed his first collegiate two-goal game, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Thursday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Loisel scored the second and third goals of the game for Augsburg (2-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC), with
Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth (Minn.) Marshall HS) scoring a power-play goal for the first marker of the game for the Auggies.
Justin Hochsprung (JR, Alexandria, Minn.) scored the lone goal of the game for St. John's (1-4-1 overall, 0-3-0 MIAC), which was outshot by a 29-26 mark by the Auggies.
Paine opened the scoring for the Auggies with his first goal of the season, a power-play tally from
Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) and Andrew Allen (FY, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS), 4:16 into the second period. Loisel gave the Auggies a 2-0 lead with his first goal of the game, scoring at the 11:32 mark from Jonathan Barrick (SR, Litchfield, Minn.).
St. John's cut the lead to one goal on Hochsprung's first goal of the season, scoring from Jascha Pettit (SR, Wadena, Minn.) at the 16:34 mark of the second period. But a backhand goal by Loisel, assisted by
Mack Ohnsted (FY, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS), at the 8:28 mark of the third period gave the Auggies a two-goal advantage again.
Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 25 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Saxton Soley (FY, Elk Mound, Wis.) had 26 saves in goal for St. John's.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/17) at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
