Auggies gain first win of year

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Playing in her first collegiate home game, Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had a goal and an assist, leading the Augsburg College women's hockey team in a 3-2 victory over Marian University (Wis.) in a nonconference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Sara Rajewsky (SO, Murdock, Minn./Benson HS) and Erica Berthold (SR, Issaquah, Wash.) also scored goals for the Auggies (1-2-0 overall), with Jessica Larkin (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Casey Miller (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) adding assists.

Amanda Waigand (SO, Swansea, Ill./Belleville West HS) scored both goals for Marian (0-2-0 overall).

Augsburg outshot Marian by a 34-29 margin in the game, including a 15-4 advantage in the third period, enabling the Auggies to hold onto their 3-2 advantage.

Waigand struck first for the Sabres with an unassisted goal 4:40 into the game. But the Auggies answered 4:05 later, when Fuechtmann scored her first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally. The Auggies took the lead at the 17:01 mark, when a Fuechtmann shot was tipped in front into the goal by Rajewsky.

Waigand tied the game for the Sabres with an unassisted goal 4:21 into the second period, but Augsburg took the lead for good when Berthold scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Larkin and Miller.

Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) collected 27 saves in goal for the win for Augsburg, while Ali Glazer (FY, Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette HS) had 31 saves in goal for Marian.

The teams complete the nonconference series on Saturday (11/3) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
