BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Two goals in a 2:11 span midway through the third period lifted Marian University (Wis.) to a 2-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg (1-3-0 overall) outshot Marian (1-2-0 overall) by a 37-26 margin in the game, but Marian goalie Amanda Alexander (SO, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Basil's HS) stopped all 37 shots she faced to earn the shutout victory. Briana Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 24 saves in goal for Augsburg.
Marian's Megan Sesing-Gomoll (SR, Fond du Lac, Wis.) scored first for the Auggies, an unassisted, power-play goal off a rebound at the 9:47 mark of the third period. Another unassisted goal off a rebound was scored at the 11:58 mark by Amanda Waigand (SO, Swansea, Ill./Belleville West HS).
Augsburg outshot Marian by an 11-5 margin in the first period and a 16-7 margin in the second period. In addition to the 37 shots on-goal, Augsburg had three shots hit the goal pipe during the game.
Erica Berthold (SR, Issaquah, Wash.) had seven shots on-goal for Augsburg, while
Claire Cripps (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.) had five shots.
Kendall Christian (SO, Moorhead, Minn.),
Rachel Hennessy (SO, Williston, N.D.) and
Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had four shots each.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a series against St. Catherine. Next Friday's (11/9) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (11/10) game is at 2 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
