Schulz records 53 saves in Auggie loss

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Goalie Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) tied a career high with 53 saves in goal for Augsburg College, helping to keep the Auggies in the contest in a 3-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Meagan Wanecke (SR, Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored two third-period goals for Gustavus (7-0-0 overall, 6-0-0 MIAC), the eventual game-winning goal at the 2:56 mark, and an empty-net goal with 46 seconds left in the game to clinch the win.

Amanda Cartony (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) scored a power-play goal in the second period for Gustavus, the No. 2-ranked team in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll. Allison Eder-Zdechlik (FY, Stillwater, Minn.) had two assists for the Gusties.

After Cartony's goal at the 2:16 mark of the second period, Augsburg tied the game at the 6:45 mark, when Rachel Hennessy (SO, Williston, N.D.) scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS). It was just the fifth goal surrendered by the Gusties in their seven games so far this season.

Schulz matched her previous career high for saves in a game, when she collected 53 saves in a 2-1 loss at Bethel on Feb. 10, 2012. It marked the sixth time in her 10 starts this season that she has had 30 or more saves in a game, the 19th time in her 27-game collegiate career.

Gustavus claimed a 56-19 advantage in shots on-goal in the game, with Tara Hoverstad (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) claiming 18 saves for the Gusties in goal. Hennessy had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Fuechtmann and Sara Rajewsky (SO, Murdock, Minn./Benson HS) had four shots each.

Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break, and will return to action on the weekend of Jan. 5-6 with a nonconference series against Finlandia (Mich.) at Ed Saugestad Rink. The game on Saturday, Jan. 5 is at 4 p.m., and the game on Sunday, Jan. 6 is at 2 p.m.
