Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson HS) scored 13 points to lead the Augsburg College women's basketball team to a 64-43 victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move to 3-2 overall (1-2 MIAC), while the Royals fall to 0-4 overall (0-3 MIAC).
Fitzgerald scored a career-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, while adding a pair of rebounds, an assist and steal. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was
Jill Tichy (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS), who finished with 11 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, while adding four rebounds and a blocked shot.
Brittany Zins (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) nearly posted a double-double for the Auggies, finishing with nine points and nine boards.
Bethel was led by Sydney Schultz, who came off the bench to lead the Royals in scoring with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.
The Auggies led for nearly the entire contest, extending their lead to as many as 21 points during the second half. After enjoying a 36-20 lead at the intermission, Augsburg sustained an early second-half Bethel rally, as the Royals cut the Auggie lead down to just eight. Augsburg was sparked by a Tichy 3-pointer at the 16:19 mark and the Auggie defense stepped up to hold the Bethel offense scoreless for more than three-and-a-half minutes. Augsburg outscored Bethel 17-5 over the middle of the second half as the Auggies cruised to the 64-43 victory.
For the game, Augsburg shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field, while the Auggies held the Royals to just 29.8 percent (14-of-47). The Auggies shot an impressive 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from beyond the three-point arc and dominated Bethel in the paint, outscoring the Royals 30-18.
Augsburg and Bethel both return to action on Wednesday (12/5) at 7:30 p.m., with the Auggies travelling to take on Hamline University and the Royals hosting Gustavus Adolphus College.
