McClellan's 5-point night leads Auggies to 8-2 win

BOXSCORE SUPERIOR, Wis. -- Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) figured in the scoring in five of Augsburg College's eight goals on the night, with a two-goal, three-assist performance in Augsburg's 8-2 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday evening at Wessman Arena.

Twelve different Auggies figured in the scoring in Friday's victory, as the Auggies improved to 3-7-0 overall. Wisconsin-Superior, ranked No. 10 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll, drops to 8-3-1 on the season.

McClellan's five points are the most by an Auggie since Nick Guran had a five-point night (three goals, two assists) in an 8-4 win over St. Mary's University on Oct. 30, 2010.

Twelve different Auggies figured in the scoring in Friday's win, with six different Auggies scoring goals. McClellan's older brother, #B.J. McClellan# (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), scored two goals, while Landon Olson (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) had a goal and an assist. Lucas Hendrickson (FY, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS), Derek Loisel (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) also scored goals, and Zach Dick (SO, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Chris Student (JR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Mack Ohnsted (FY, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) had two assists apiece.

Augsburg had a scoring explosion after a 1-1 first period, scoring four goals in the second period and three in the third. Five of Augsburg's eight goals came on special teams, as the Auggies went 4-for-8 on the power play and also scored a shorthanded goal. 

B.J. McClellan scored the first two goals for the Auggies, starting the scoring with a goal from Olson and Ben McClellan just 16 seconds into the game. He gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead at the 7:54 mark of the second period, scoring a power-play goal from Ben McClellan and Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS).

Augsburg scored six straight goals, including three in a 2:47 span late in the second period. Ben McClellan scored from Niklas Almstrom (JR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Dick at the 15:15 mark, Loisel scored from Dick at the 17:28 mark, and Olson scored on the power play from Ohnsted and Student at the 18:02 mark.

Augsburg then scored two power-play goals during a 61-second span of a major penalty in the third period, with Hendrickson scoring from Tom Kuhn (FY, Hastings, Minn.) and Ben McClellan at the 6:57 mark, and Ben McClellan scoring from Student and Ohnsted at the 7:08 mark. Paine closed the scoring for the Auggies with a shorthanded, unassisted goal at the 12:43 mark.

Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-Superior by a 30-20 margin, with Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collecting 18 saves in goal for the win. Drew Strandberg had 14 saves for the Yellowjackets, with Ryan Pinoniemi collecting eight saves in relief.

Marc Fortin scored for the Yellowjackets from Mike Orosey and Brett Wold in the first period, and Pat Dalbec scored from Kyle Leahy and Joey Massingham in the third period.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (12/8) at 7 p.m., with a game at Northland (Wis.) in Ashland, Wis.
