Augsburg falls 4-3 to St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- David Hines (SR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS), Erik Ordahl (SO, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and #J.P. Perpich# (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 4-3 decision to host St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the Northfield Ice Arena.

Goalie Justin Lochner (JR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) claimed 24 saves in goal for Augsburg (8-12-1 overall, 4-7-1 MIAC), which outshot St. Olaf (10-6-5 overall, 6-4-2 MIAC) by a 29-28 margin. Ben Leis had 26 saves in goal for the Oles.

Hines opened the scoring for Augsburg with his second goal of the season, assisted by Derek Loisel (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Ben McClellan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), at the 7:18 mark of the first period. But St. Olaf took the lead with two goals in a 1:08 span -- Peter Rohn scoring form Derek Grogan and Britton Smith at the 8:37 mark, and Ross Trousdale scoring from Charlie Raskob and Rohn on the power play at the 9:45 mark.

The Auggies tied the game at 2-2 with Ordahl's first goal of the season, assisted by Thomas Paine (FY, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS), with 34 seconds left in the first period.

St. Olaf took a 4-2 lead with a second-period power-play goal from Derek Grogan, assisted by Trousdale and Rohn, and a third-period goal by Dylan Porter, assisted by Trousdale and Austin Wetmore. Augsburg cut the lead to 4-3 on Perpich's second goal of the season, assisted by Wesley Waytashek (SO, Little Falls, Minn.) and Loren Egan (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), at the 7:13 mark of the final frame.

Ordahl and #B.J. McClellan# (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had four shots on-goal each for the Auggies, while Hines, Trevor Doden (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) and Landon Olson (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) had three shots apiece.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play next weekend with a series against Bethel. Next Friday's (2/10) game is at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, while next Saturday's (2/11) game is at 7 p.m. at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
