Auggies compete at Cornell Invite

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa--The Augsburg College volleyball team split its first two matches on day one of the 2012 Cornell Classic Invitational Friday, falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the afternoon match before defeating Wisconsin-Plattville in the nightcap. The Auggies dropped two tough matched on Saturday, falling 3-2 to Northwestern-Roseville in the morning match and falling 3-1 to No. 18 ranked Wartburg College in the afternoon match.

Friday, September 14

Wisconsin-Eau Claire def. Augsburg College 3-1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-19, 25-16)

RECAP-- Ashley Peper (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Colleen Ourada (JR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) combined for 21 kills, but the Auggies could not hold off the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the opening round of the Cornell College Classic Friday evening. Jamila Lee (SR, Richfield, Minn.) added eight kills for Augsburg, while Nikolene Miller (SR, Tomahawk, Wis.) added five kills and four blocks to aid the offensive attack.

Emily McCourt (JR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) added 30 assists, while defensive specialist Emma Sievers (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin Derham Hall) led Augsburg with 12 digs.  

Augsburg College def. vs Wisconsin-Plattville 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-14, 25-23)

RECAP--The Auggies closed out day one with a four-set win against Wisconsin-Plattville to finish day one with a 1-1 record. Colleen Ourada and Ashley Peper collected 18 kills each to lead the Auggies, who recorded a team hitting percentage of .278. In addition to the 18 kills, Ourada recorded a team-high 21 digs and six blocks (five solo).

Emily McCourt recorded a match best 49 assists, while Nikolene Miller recorded eight kills and six blocks (two solo).

Saturday, September 15

Northwestern College def. Augsburg College 3-2 (17-25, 17-25, 25-12, 25-19, 15-12)

RECAP-- Colleen Ourada and Ashley Peper recorded 14 kills each, but the Augsburg College volleyball team fell in a tough five-set match to the Northwestern College Eagles. In a rematch between the two teams who faced each other last weekend, the Eagles rallied back from a two-set deficit to earn the win. Emily McCourt recorded 44 assists and a service ace, while Nikolene Miller claimed 11 kills and six blocks (one solo) in the match.



No. 18 Wartburg College def Augsburg College 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 27-25, 25-20)

RECAP--Ashley Peper recorded a team-best 14 kills and hit .294, but the Augsburg College volleyball team lost a four-set match against No.18-ranked Wartburg College Saturday afternoon. After winning the second set to event the match score at 1-1, the Auggies had a match point opportunity late in the third set but could not hold off the Knights, who would close out the third and fourth sets to earn the win.

Jessica Lindquist (FY, Sebeka, Minn.) claimed a season-high nine kills, while Nikolene Miller and Micah Sater (SR, Fridley, Minn./Centennial HS) recorded eight kills each.
