BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS--
Scott Clinton (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Mohamed Sankoh (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) each recorded second half goals, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Clinton's goal, his team leading third of the season, came in the 58th minute off a penalty kick, and put the Auggies on top early in the second half by a score of 1-0. Sankoh would add a goal of his own in the 80th minute off a pass from
Grant Griffin (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) to give the Auggies (6-2-1 overall, 2-0-0 MIAC) their second consecutive conference win and sole posession of first-place in the MIAC regular-season standings. Griffin's assist was his first of the season, and came off some quality play by
Sherif Soud (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan HS) and
Ryan Schlittler (JR, Eagan, Minn.).
"Our second goal was fun to watch," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "It started with Sherif playing a first time pass to Schlittler, and then everyone following suit until Grant was isolated one-on-one on the other side of the field. He drew everyone in and found Sankoh, who calmly got the monkey off his back."
Augsburg outshot Macalester (0-6-1) by a 16-8 margin, and held a 7-6 margin in corner kicks. Augsburg goalkeeper
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) recorded two saves, while Macalester goalkeeper Jesse Yourish (SR, Port Townsend, Wash.) recorded three saves in the contest.
"Overall Sherif was solid and Lynch kept the clean sheet in spite of a few moments where we checked out in the back third," continued Holker. "
Jeremy Hish (FY, Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie HS) gave us very good minutes and had the look of someone who wants more. That was encouraging."
Augsburg returns to action this Saturday (9/22) when they travel to Saint Paul, Minn. to take on the University of St. Thomas at 1 p.m.
