Auggies fall 2-1 at UST

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Josh Sweeney (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored a second-half goal for Augsburg College, but the Auggies' men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at UST's South Field.

St. Thomas (5-2-2 overall, 2-0-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg (6-3-1 overall, 2-1-0 MIAC) by a 16-9 margin, including a 10-2 advantage in the first half, as the Tommies took a 2-0 halftime lead.

"I don't mean to discredit St. Thomas's performance because they were very sharp today - they played us off the park from start to finish and deserved this result. However, both of their goals were created from our own foolishness," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker.

Sweeney scored his third goal of the season for the Auggies in the 70th minute, assisted by Tyler Heaps (SR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS). Nick Rapisarda scored for St. Thomas from Ryan Berhnardt in the 16th minute, and Alex Bernhardt scored from Macalister Enderson in the 36th minute.

Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had four saves in goal for Augsburg, while Mitchell Wolff had two saves for the Tommies.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/26) at 7:30 p.m. with a game at St. John's.

"Unfortunately, this may have been our worst performance in regard to effort and focus since our 3-1 loss at Colorado College in 2007. With two poor performances in our last three games, we should get a little nervous about what team will show up Wednesday at St. John's," Holker said. "I am excited, however, for this challenge. This program has a proud tradition of overcoming obstacles and battling through challenging times. We will grow from this."
