Fitzgerald gives Auggies win in 2OT

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) scored on a header from Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) with 5:40 left in the second overtime, giving the Augsburg College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Allen provided a service from 25 yards out on the right side, finding Fitzgerald in perfect position for a running header to the left corner of the goal for the game-winner. The goal was Fitzgerald's second of the year.

"Unlike our previous overtime games this year, we got to experience the thrill of victory tonight, as Marie Fitzgerald headed home a beautiful cross by Molly Allen in the second overtime," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "It's just one game and there are many more challenges ahead, but the team definitely showed some resolve tonight. I thought our mentality in overtime was exceptional."

Augsburg (7-3-0 overall, 2-2-0 MIAC) goalkeeper Lexi Felix (FY, Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani HS) improved to 3-0-0 on the season with a four-save effort. Megan Favorite (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) had eight saves in goal for St. Benedict (3-3-2 overall, 2-2-0 MIAC). Augsburg outshot St. Benedict by a 21-16 margin in the game, including a 7-1 advantage in the two overtime periods.

After a scoreless first half, Augsburg opened the scoring 11 minutes into the second half, as Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored her fourth goal of the season, directing a high ball over the St. Benedict goalkeeper off assists from Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and Brittany Palmer (FY, Blaine, Minn.).

St. Benedict tied the game in the 73rd minute, as Laura Kosch (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) pushed a shot past a sliding Felix, assisted by Colleen Bouchard (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS).

"It's too early to call this game a must win, but without a doubt this was an important one for us, especially after our relatively poor start to the conference season," Navarre said. "Olivia Muyres did well to get in behind the St. Benedict defense off a nice pass from Bri Clark to open the scoring. Unfortunately, we could not make that goal stand as a mistake in our back line allowed St. Benedict back into the match."

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/29) at 1 p.m., traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to face St. Catherine University.

"There are just no easy games in the MIAC, and we will have to be ready on Saturday when we face another difficult opponent in St. Catherine," Navarre said.
