Auggies score 4-3 win in OT

BOXSCORE DULUTH, Minn. -- Scott Clinton (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime, giving the Augsburg College men's soccer team a 4-3 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Ordean-East Middle School.

Clinton scored the game-winning goal from Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), as the Auggies improved to 2-0-1 overall. Osip had two assists in the game, while Josh Sweeney (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a goal and two assists. Gottlieb Uahengo (SR, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) and Chad Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) also scored goals for the Auggies.

"This was a free kick training session. We should have just put the goals 30 yards apart and exchanged chances, because that's exactly how the game was played," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Six of the seven goals came from set pieces -- throw-ins, free kicks, corner kicks -- it was chaos. We aren't pleased having given up goals from these situations, but UW-Superior is a big team and it does very well in these moments. To give away three goals and still win shows a lot of character. There was a moment at the end of regulation that helped motivate our guys to be even more focused and driven and that certainly propelled us to the win in overtime."

Clinton returned to the Auggie lineup at the perfect time, Holker noted, with the upcoming departure of Uahengo from the team, as he attends a study-abroad program. Uahengo scored the first goal of the game for the Auggies, assisted by Sweeney 16 minutes into the contest.

"Scott Clinton played for the first time this fall coming off an injury and he made his short minutes count," Holker said. "Having him return will ease the pain of losing Gottlieb Uahengo for the remainder of the season to a study abroad program. 'G's' contributions to this program over the past four seasons have been fantastic. His spirit is always positive, and his desire to learn and grow is just insatiable. We all have no doubt amazing things are ahead of him. He will be deeply missed. I'm glad he was able to score a goal in each of his final two games as an Auggie."

The game was a back-and-forth contest, as the Yellowjackets matched every Auggie goal in regulation time. Ben Royce scored an unassisted goal for Wisconsin-Superior in the 26th minute, but Augsburg took the lead two minutes into the second half, as Sweeney scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Osip.

"It was a Jefferson (High School) Jaguar party out there tonight as Sweeney collected a goal on an overhead volley off Danny Osip's throw-in. Three Jaguars scored tonight," Holker said. "Osip played the role of contributor today, setting up two of our goals. He is becoming more and more confident at center back and has been very valuable thus far in the season."

Wisconsin-Superior's Nate Engel leveled the game again with a goal from Josh Levenick in the 47th minute, but nine minutes later, Gilmer scored his second goal of the year, assisted by Sweeney. The Yellowjackets tied the game in the 70th minute, with Alberto Rivero scoring an unassisted goal.

"Chad Gilmer did what he does best -- score off a free kick," Holker said. "They cleared the initial corner kick, but not far enough and he slipped around the back of the pack unmarked for an easy goal from Sweeney's return service. He almost grabbed a brace when his free kick from 20 yards out was met by an incredible save from Matt Elder with 15 minutes to go."

Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-Superior by a 13-9 margin. Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) collected three saves in goal, while the Yellowjackets' Elder had four saves.

Augsburg travels to the Milwaukee, Wis., area for a pair of games this weekend -- at Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday (9/8) at 1 p.m., and at the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday (9/9) at 1 p.m.
