Auggies edged in overtime 59-53

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Abbey Luger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) led the Augsburg College women's basketball team with 16 points, but the Auggies dropped a 59-53 decision in overtime to visiting St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Jolene Blood (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) scored 11 points with four rebounds, four assists and six steals for Augsburg (5-10 overall, 3-9 MIAC), while Anne Skriba (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Fond du Lac HS) had 10 points and three rebounds.

St. Mary's (12-3 overall, 9-3 MIAC), which outscored Augsburg 13-7 in overtime, was led by Jamie Stefely (SR, Lisle, Ill./St. Francis HS), who scored 20 points with 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sara Schoenthaler (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 12 points, Courtney Euerle (JR, Litchfield, Minn.) scored 10 points with nine rebounds and three assists, and Jessica Thone (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) had 10 points and six rebounds.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first-half, shooting under 30 percent but St. Mary's was able to take a 19-14 lead into the locker room at the break. The Auggies picked things up in the second-half and tied the game 30-30 at the 12:19 mark off a jumper by Katie Ahlstrom (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS). Augsbur took its first lead of the second-half off a Luger layup at the 4:46 mark. Augsburg took a 46-42 lead off a 3-pointer at the 1:24 mark but the Cardinals were able to score the final four points of the game to force overtime. The Auggies never led in the overtime session and fell to the St. Mary's 59-53 after a hard fought contest.

Augsburg outshot St. Mary's 36.4 percent (20-of-55) to 34.6 percent (18-of-52). The Cardinals outrebounded the Auggies by a 44-29 margin and were able to connect on 20-of-27 from the free throw line, while Augsburg was only able to hit 8-of-12.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Monday (1/21) at 7:30 p.m., traveling to Arden Hills to take on the Bethel University Royals.
