SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Top-ranked heavyweight
Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) claimed his 20th victory of the season with a major-decision win, but his Augsburg College wrestling team dropped a 23-13 decision to host Augustana College (S.D.) in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at the Elmen Center.
The defending NCAA Division III national champion at heavyweight, Johnson improved to 20-1 on the year with an 11-1 victory over Brian Schultz. Johnson picked up his 15th bonus-point victory of the season -- nine pins and six major decisions. Johnson is now 88-13 in his Augsburg career.
Augustana (7-3 overall), ranked No. 19 in the NCAA Division II national rankings, won six of the 10 bouts over Augsburg (3-3 overall), ranked No. 7 in Division III.
Augsburg's
Mike Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 6 at 125 pounds, improved to 19-2 on the season with a 3-1 victory in sudden-victory overtime over T.J. North, avenging an earlier loss to North at the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragon Open on Dec. 1.
Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) also picked up a sudden-victory overtime win for the Auggies, a 4-2 win over Tim Weber at 174 pounds in the final match of the afternoon, to improve to 17-6 overall.
Also claiming a win for the Auggies was 133-pounder
Tossaporn "Boyd" Suparat (SR, North Branch, Minn.), who improved to 17-6 on the year with a 4-2 win over Brandon Chesnut.
The lone pin of the day came in the opening match for Augustana, when 184-pounder Sean Derry scored a 2:08 match-ender over
Justin Bowland (JR, Foley, Minn.). Jayd Docken, ranked No. 6 in Division II at 197, scored a 6-1 win over
Matt Hechsel (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.).
After three Augsburg wins to give the Auggies a 10-9 lead, the host Vikings scored four straight victories to clinch the match triumph. Brandon Charbonneau scored a 6-3 win over
Tom Kuehn (SO, Fargo, N.D./West Fargo HS) at 141; No. 5-ranked Nate Herda claimed a 12-4, major-decision win over
Rashad Kennedy (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) at 149; Shawn Hatlestad claimed a 7-1 win over
Kurt Knutsen (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) at 157; and Parker Swanson claimed a 12-0, major-decision win over
Quinten Strand (FY, Viroqua, Wis./De Soto HS) at 165.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/26) at 3 p.m. with the Minnesota Duals at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg will face Concordia-Moorhead at 3 p.m., St. John's at 4:30 p.m. and St. Olaf at 6 p.m.
