Wild 1st period lifts Auggies to 7-3 victory

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- If you missed the first 16:44 of Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game between Augsburg College and St. Mary's University, you missed a lot.

The two teams combined for nine of the 10 goals scored in the game in the first 16:44 of action, as the Auggies claimed a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals on Friday night at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored two goals and added an assist for Augsburg (4-11-3 overall, 2-5-2 MIAC), while #B.J. McClellan# (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), Tyler Roberg (SO, Rice Lake, Wis.) and Landon Olson (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) had a goal and assist each.

Ryan Griffiths (JR, Arvada, Colo.) and Kevin Wentland (SR, Columbia Heights, Minn.) had a goal and assist each for St. Mary's (7-10-1 overall, 5-3-1 MIAC).

The Auggies rallied from an early 2-1 deficit in a wild first period, when they claimed a 6-3 advantage. The two teams combined for six goals in the opening 7:17 of the game and nine goals in 16:44 -- with the nine goals coming on the first 22 combined shots on-goal of the contest.

Seventeen different players -- 10 for Augsburg, seven for St. Mary's -- figured in the scoring with either a goal or an assist, and nine different players scored goals in the game. Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 36-19 margin.

The opening barrage drove both starting goalies from the game in the first 11:20 of play. Augsburg's John Bretzman (SO, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) relieved starter Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) and stopped all 12 shots he faced to pick up the victory. St. Mary's goalie Jason Horstman (SR, Faribault, Minn.) relieved starter Andy Scheib (SR, Sun Prairie, Wis.) and collected 25 saves in goal.

The scoring opened just 44 seconds into the game, when Ben McClellan scored from B.J. McClellan. St. Mary's took the lead with the next two goals, as Wentland scored from Bob Marx (SO, Sioux City, Iowa) and Scott Deur (JR, Big Rapids, Mich.) at the 2:53 mark, and Griffiths scored on the power play from Austin Balko (JR, Midland, Mich.) and Wentland 2:07 later.

Augsburg tied the game on Roberg's first goal of the season, assisted by Carl Krieger (FY, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) and Loren Egan (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), 44 seconds after Griffiths' goal. The Cardinals took the lead back 23 seconds later, when Tommy Robaczewski (JR, Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored from Brad Denney (JR, Fishers, Ind.) and Griffiths, but Augsburg tied the game again when Olson scored an unassisted, power-play goal.

Olson's goal was the first of five straight goals to close the scoring for Augsburg. Scott Eberline (JR, Northville, Mich./Novi HS) scored from Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek HS) and Roberg at the 11:20 mark, and Derek Loisel (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored from Olson on the power play at the 13:21 mark. The first-period outburst ended at the 16:44 mark, when Ben McClellan scored his second goal of the game, a power-play marker from Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth (Minn.) Marshall HS).

An empty-net goal from B.J. McClellan, assisted by Ben McClellan, at the 18:40 mark of the third period ended the scoring.

The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday (1/26) at 7:30 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
