Rachel Hennessy (SO, Williston, N.D.) and
Sandra Hinz (SR, Stockholm, Sweden/Solna Gymnasium HS) scored goals for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 3-2 decision to host St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
Hennessy scored an unassisted goal, her sixth of the season, at the 19:45 mark of the first period, and Hinz scored her second goal of the campaign at the 9:28 mark of the second period, assisted by
Erica Berthold (SR, Issaquah, Wash.), for Augsburg (5-10-1 overall, 1-7-1 MIAC).
Breanna Peterson and Hope Karban had a goal and an assist each for St. Mary's (5-9-0 overall, 3-6-0 MIAC), while McKenna Parent adding the other Cardinal goal.
Parent opened the scoring with a goal 65 seconds into the game, assisted by Julianne Bartosz. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead on Karban's goal, assisted by Peterson and Macki Fadness.
After Augsburg cut into the lead with Hennessy's unassisted goal just before the end of the first period, the Cardinals struck early in the second period, as Peterson scored from Mary DeBartolo and Karban at the 1:54 mark. Hinz finished the scoring with her goal from Berthold midway through the second period.
St. Mary's claimed a 29-26 advantage in shots on-goal in the game.
Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 26 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Tori Herrmann had 24 saves for St. Mary's.
Megan Bergland (FY, Thief River Falls, Minn.) had five shots on-goal for Augsburg, while
Brenna Nakonechny (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) and
Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had four shots on-goal each.
The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday (1/26) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
