Auggies rally for tie with Cardinals

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Diana Bocklund (SR, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) scored the game-tying goal and added an assist on her team's other third-period goal, as the Augsburg College women's hockey team rallied for a 3-3, overtime tie with St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Augsburg (5-10-2 overall, 1-7-2 MIAC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit early in the third period to tie the game. Rachel Hennessy (SO, Williston, N.D.) scored her seventh goal of the season at the 4:15 mark, assisted by Bocklund and Brenna Nakonechny (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS), and Bocklund scored her first goal of the season, a power-play marker, assisted by Nakonechny and Claire Cripps (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.), at the 12:55 mark.

Jeanna Dudley (SR, Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal 1:05 into the second period, assisted by Bergland. But St. Mary's (5-9-1 overall, 3-6-1 MIAC) tied the game just 18 seconds later, with Brittany Therrien (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scoring from Haley Coolsaet (JR, Grosse Island, Mich.) and McKenna Parent (FY, Ham Lake, Minn./Anoka HS).

The Cardinals took the lead at the 10:06 mark of the second period, when Katie Ehlenfeldt (FY, Beaver Dam, Wis.) scored from Mackenzie Klimek (SO, Hastings, Minn.). Breanna Peterson (SO, Macomb, Mich.) scored on an unassisted, shorthanded goal 2:40 into the third period to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 31-29 margin. Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 28 saves for Augsburg, while Sarah Gustafson (JR, Esko, Minn.) had 26 saves for St. Mary's.

Hennessy had seven shots on-goal for Augsburg, while Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had five shots and Dudley had four shots.

Augsburg returns to action next weekend with a series against St. Olaf. Next Friday's (2/1) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (2/2) game is in Northfield, Minn.
