Augsburg sets scoring record in 13-0 win over Finlandia

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS – Setting a single-game record for goals in a game, the Augsburg College women's hockey team scored a 13-0 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) in a nonconference contest on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Kayla Fuechtmann (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) scored four goals, while Rachel Hennessy (SO, Williston, N.D.) scored three goals and added four assists for Augsburg (2-8-1 overall). Claire Cripps (FY, Hutchinson, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist, and Casey Miller (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) scored two goals for the Auggies. Nicole Gorr (SR, Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South HS) and Kendall Christian (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) also scored goals for Augsburg.

In all, 12 Auggies figured in the scoring, with Diana Bocklund (SR, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and Jessica Larkin (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) contributing three assists each, Brenna Nakonechny (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) and Erica Berthold (SR, Issaquah, Wash.) adding two assists each, and Jeanna Dudley (SR, Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes Community HS) and Megan Bergland (FY, Thief River Falls, Minn.) adding assists.

Augsburg broke its single-game school record for goals in a game, set on Nov. 20, 2003 in a 12-1 win at Hamline. Hennessy's seven points fell one short of the school's single-game record for points in a game, eight set by Annie Annunaizato in the Nov. 20, 2003 win at Hamline. Annunziato's five goals in that game are also Augsburg's single-game school record, a mark which Fuechtmann fell one goal shy of tying.

Augsburg built an 8-0 lead after the first period, claiming a 28-1 shots-on-goal advantage over Finlandia (0-11-0 overall) in the opening stanza. The Auggies outshot the Lions by a 50-12 margin in the game.

Brianna Schulz (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) stopped all 10 shots she faced in goal for Augsburg in the first two periods, with Kristine Fonti (FY, Rothschild, Wis./Wausau West HS) making her Augsburg debut in goal in the third period, collecting two saves.

Breanna Hynes (SO, Victoria, B.C.) had 14 saves in the first 13:35 of the game in goal for Finlandia, with Stephanie LaMore (SR, Dexter, Mich.) claiming 23 saves in relief.

Hennessy and Cripps scored two goals each for the Auggies in the first period, while Miller and Fuechtmann added power-play goals. Gorr and Christian added goals for the Auggies in the opening frame. After taking a 3-0 lead, the Auggies scored four goals in a 3:55 span to take a commanding lead midway through the first period.

Augsburg went 3-for-4 on the power play in the game. Fuechtmann now has a team-high six goals this season, tied for fourth place among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall statistics. Hennessy has a team-best 11 points (five goals, six assists), moving her into a tie for fourth place in points among MIAC players.

The teams complete the nonconference series on Sunday (1/5) at 2 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
