Kornbaum leads Augsburg to victory over SJU

BOXSCORE COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 77-65 victory over St. John's University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Sexton Arena.

Kornbaum led Augsburg (10-1 overall, 5-1 MIAC), posting his third 20-plus-point scoring effort of the season with an 11-for-16 shooting performance from the field, while adding nine rebounds, an assist and a steal. The performance marked Kornbaum's 10th double-figure scoring effort in his 11 games this season, and his eighth game posting eight or more rebounds.

Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), who finished with 15 points and three assists, and Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS), who posted 11 points and four assists, including a 3-for-4 shooting night from beyond the three-point arc.

St. John's (3-8 overall, 2-4 MIAC) was led by Seth Marx, who finished with 11 points and four boards.

After the Johnnies scored the opening seven points of the game, Augsburg countered with a 21-4 run. The Auggies stretched their lead to as many as 17 points and took a 38-22 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

Augsburg extended its lead to as many as 23 points in the second half, after Schmidt connected on a three-pointer at the 8:56 mark. St. John's countered with an 11-0 run, cutting the Auggie lead to 62-50. But Augsburg was able to keep its lead in double figures, and a Kornbaum dunk with 41 seconds left put an exclaimation point on the victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field, marking the third time this season Augsburg shot more than 50 percent from the field. St. John's connected on 45.5 percent (25-of-55) of its shots. The Auggies claimed a 36-26 advantage on the boards.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday (1/9) with Augsburg hosting Carleton College at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, while St. John's hosts Concordia College-Moorhead.
