BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored the lone goal of the game in the 27th minute, and
Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) stopped all four shots he faced for his second shutout of the season, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team scored a 1-0 win over visiting Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
With the win, goalkeeper Lynch moved into a tie for the second-most goalkeeper victories in a career in Augsburg history, recording his 28th career victory. Lynch tied Pascaul Venter '10, who recorded 28 wins from 2005-09. Mark Anderson '81 holds the school record for wins with 37 from 1977-80.
In 46 career games, Lynch is now 28-13-5, with his .663 career winning percentage third-best in school history. His 18 career shutouts are also third-best in school history, while his 0.89 career goals-against-average is fourth-best.
"The most important part of the night was the clean sheet. We have been bleeding goals recently, and getting a shutout was a priority," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Congratulations to Clayton for his outstanding contributions to the program over his career."
The Auggies (9-4-1 overall, 4-2-0 MIAC) claimed the only goal of the game at the 26:48 mark. Clinton played a ball on the end line to the left of the goal, with the service deflecting off a Hamline (3-8-1 overall, 0-5-1 MIAC) defender and into the net.
"Scott's goal found a bit of luck on the way into the goal, but that's what we need the rest of the season," Holker said. "There were several other very sharp moments that went unrewarded.
John Leyva (FY, San Jacinto, Calif.) was involved in two of them -- great to see him getting into good spots in front of the goal."
The Auggies outshot Hamline by a 19-6 margin, and Augsburg's defense and midfielders controlled possession for a majority of the game, with a strong effort to protect Lynch.
"I thought
Festus Lamin (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) and
Joey Decklever (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) were two of our better players tonight," Holker said. "They were sharp on both sides of the ball and composed in the right moments."
Derrick Mora (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had 11 saves in goal for Hamline. Pat Hager (JR, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Osseo HS) had two shots for the Pipers.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (10/19) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
