BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Quarterback
Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) threw for collegiate personal-bests of 384 yards and five touchdowns, leading the Augsburg College football team to a 41-17 victory over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Scott completed 30-of-47 passes for 384 yards and five touchdowns against one interception for Augsburg (4-2 overall, 3-2 MIAC), which outgained St. Olaf (1-6 overall, 0-5 MIAC) by a 469-385 margin.
Five different Auggie receivers caught touchdown passes from Scott in the game, with four gaining 70 receiving yards or more each.
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) caught 11 passes for 83 yards and a six-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, while
Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught six passes for 99 yards and a 25-yard scoring pass in the third quarter.
Erickson Saye (SO, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Fridley HS) caught three passes for 72 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
Scott Bossard caught two passes for 32 yards and a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Running back
Phil Putratz (SR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) produced 142 all-purpose yards in the game, with 72 rushing yards on 17 carries and 70 receiving yards on six catches, including a 24-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 59 all-purpose yards -- 31 rushing yards on four carries and two catches for 28 yards.
Scott now leads MIAC quarterbacks in both passing yardage per-game (271.8) and passing touchdowns (19), while Sonnenfeld now leads MIAC receivers in both receiving yardage per-game (91.7) and receiving touchdowns (9).
Defensive back/wide receiver
Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) had 164 return yards in the game on special teams, including a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter, his second career special teams return touchdown.
Linebacker
Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) collected 21 tackles (seven solo) and a half-sack in the game, part of four quarterback sacks for the Auggies in the game. Juberian leads the MIAC in total tackles (92) and tackles per-game (15.3) -- 24 tackles more than the second-place person in the conference tackle rankings.
Augsburg built a 14-0 lead after one quarter, with Scott's touchdown to Bossard capping an eight-play, 42-yard march on its first drive of the game, and Bourne-McFarlane scoring on his 73-yard punt return.
But St. Olaf trimmed the advantage to 14-10, as Eric Tusa (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) connected on a 42-yard field goal and Nate Penz (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Asp (SR, Edina, Minn.) to finish a 12-play, 89-yard drive.
Augsburg took a 21-10 lead on Putratz's 24-yard touchdown reception from Scott with 2:06 left in the second quarter, capping a 10-play, 75-yard drive. The Oles cut the lead to 21-17 on a one-yard touchdown pass from Penz to Jake Schmiesing (SR, Stillwater, Minn.) with 54 seconds left.
Bizzare weather -- ranging from rain to sleet -- caused a 35-minute weather delay in the final minute of the first half after lightning was detected in the area.
After play resumed, the Auggies scored the final 20 points of the game in the seocnd half. Sonnenfeld's 25-yard touchdown reception from Scott capped a three-play, 45-yard drive with 11:41 left in the third quarter, and Saye's 55-yard touchdown reception from Scott ended a four-play, 65-yard drive with 3:40 left in the fourth quarter. Carl's six-yard pass form Scott ended a 10-play, 64-yard drive with 12:34 left in the fourth quarter.
Augsburg's defense held firm, forcing eight St. Olaf punts -- including punts on five of the Oles' seven second-half drives.
Avery Dorsett (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had an interception for the Auggies in the third quarter.
For St. Olaf, Penz completed 25-of-33 passing for 271 yards and two touchdowns against an interception. Schmiesing had nine catches for 70 yards, while Asp had four catches for 58 yards. Joel Reinhardt (JR, Eagan, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) had five receptions for 56 yards, and Kevin Odom (SR, Winter Springs, Fla.) had four catches for 65 yards. Connor McCormick (SO, Caledonia, Minn.) rushed 16 times for 71 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg's
Enrico Barrozo (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Spencer Corey (JR, Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) had seven tackles each, and
Denzel Anderson (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Bourne-McFarlane had six tackles each, with Anderson recording 1.5 sacks. St. Olaf's Christian Lujan (SR, Tavares, Fla.) and Derek Henle (SR, Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had seven tackles each.
Both teams return to action next Saturday (10/26) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and St. Olaf hosting crosstown rival Carleton.
