Kordah scores twice, Holker reaches 100 wins

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) scored two goals in the first half, leading Augsburg College to a 4-1 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer contest on Wednesday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and John Leyva (FY, San Jacinto, Calif.) also scored goals for Augsburg, which improved to 7-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 in MIAC play.

The win was a career milestone for Augsburg head coach Greg Holker, who reached the 100-win career plateau in his 10th season with the Auggies. Augsburg's career leader in men's soccer coaching victories, Holker is now 100-59-22 in his Auggie career. His 100 wins are more wins for the Auggies than the program had in the 24 seasons prior to his arrival at Augsburg in 2004 (98-261-28 from 1980 to 2003).

Clinton opened the scoring in the 25th minute, scoring on a rebound off a blocked shot by Barinedum Kordah (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS). Just 2:14 later, Kordah scored his first goal off a corner by Edi Becerra (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS). Kordah's second goal came in the 39th minute, when he scored on a deflection off a Concordia defender, with Bobby Kohl (FY, Shorewood, Wis.) getting credit for the assist.

"I thought Lekpea was very efficient tonight, taking both goals with great poise," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Scott's goal was shifty -- he was very sharp to cut in and get the defender to go down, and once that opening cleared he made no mistake slapping it in the top corner."

The Auggies made the score 4-0 in the 69th minute, when Leyva scored his first collegiate goal, depositing a cross from Ngochinyan Ollor (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) in the net.

"Chinyan's work all night was good -- he ran into good spaces and created problems for the opponents. He cleared space to Lekpea's first goal and then set up Leyva for his first collegiate score," Holker said. "John was in the right place at the right moment to tap it in -- credit to him for finding that space. Sam Connor (SO, Becket, Mass./Williston Northampton School) has been in very good form recently and tonight was no different. He's improving in possession as well, and that is exciting as we move forward into the heart of our schedule."

Augsburg was able to play 20 players in the contest. Goalkeeper Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) made one save in the first half, and Nick Lenertz (SO, Newport, Minn./Park HS) made six saves in the second half.

The Auggies surrendered a goal in the 89th minute, when Concordia's Brett Wegleitner (SR, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Desert Ridge (Ariz.) HS) scored on a cross from Matthew Fulks (FY, Fargo, N.D./Shanley HS).

"Scoring four goals in an MIAC game is not an easy task, so I was pleased with our output on the night," Holker said. "However, I am far from pleased that we lost focus and conceded a goal in the final minutes. Nick entered at halftime and was in command back there, but he was left on an island when we didn't track players on that failed clearance. Once it went wide, we could see from the side we were in trouble. That has to be tidied up -- no matter what the score is."

Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 17-11 margin, including an 8-2 advantage in the first half. Peter Runquist (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) had five saves in goal for the Cobbers.

Augsburg returns to action with a nonconference contest at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the No. 13-ranked team nationally, on Saturday (10/5) at 1 p.m.
