BOXSCORE ST. PETER, Minn. -- Two goals in a 5:57 span in the second half provided the winning margin for host Gustavus Adolphus College in a 2-0 triumph over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the Gustie Soccer Field.
The contest was tied 0-0 after the first half, with Augsburg (9-6-1 overall, 4-4-0 MIAC) holding a 5-4 advantage in shots. But Gustavus (11-2-1 overall, 8-0-0 MIAC) outshot the Auggies by an 8-2 margin in the second half and scored twice midway through the period.
"Tough loss today. In the first half, we controlled the game very well, and had a lot more of the ball. They played a bit lower in a 4-3-3 and that allowed us to bite up a bit on their wingers and keep them locked in their half. They were threatening on the long ball over the top of our backs, while we kept it on the floor as much as we could -- the field was a bit hard and bumpy and that didn't help us in our attack, but neither team really created any significant chances in the first half," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "In the second half, they changed to a 4-4-2 and did better playing into the targets and off of them. We survived an early onslaught of five corner kicks in a row, and then
Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) saved a penalty when
Danny Osip (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) was whistled for a handball. Tough PK to concede as Danny was on his knees after being knocked from behind."
The Gusties scored at the 71:46 mark, when Patrick Roth scored from Charlie Adams. The two switched roles for the second goal of the game, as Adams scored from Roth at the 77:43 mark.
"The goals came from wide play, however -- they created a 1-v-1 moment in the corner just past our bench and Charlie Adams put a great ball across the box that Patrick Roth slid onto for their first goal. The second goal came eerily, as David Lilly popped a ball into the box from 30 yards out that Zach Brown headed to the side. Roth was there but miss-hit his volley and it trickled down to a dead space that Charlie ran onto and then popped it under the bar from 12 yards. We have been vulnerable when teams get behind us and unfortunately that bit us today," Holker said. "We were close -- had we deleted a few moments we were right with them. That's a very good Gustavus team. They have an excellent spine, and a few players that can change the game on their own."
Lynch recorded five saves in goal for Augsburg, while Brett Ylonen had five saves in goal for Gustavus.
Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) had two of Augsburg's seven shots in the game.
The Auggies close the regular season with hopes of earning a berth in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs -- at St. Olaf on Tuesday (10/29) at 3:30 p.m. and hosting St. Thomas next Saturday (11/2) at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
"With today's results, we have to get two wins in our final two games and hope St. John's loses at Concordia next weekend. That's our only route to extend our season," Holker said.
