Auggies net key 1-0 win at St. Olaf

BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Barinedum Kordah (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) scored the lone goal of the game in the 84th minute, and Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) collected three saves for his third shutout of the season, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 win over St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

"Our guys played that match as well as they could. Each guy served his role to perfection and made a big difference. This was a big win for us for a lot of reasons," said Augsburg coach Greg Holker. "Overall, it was a tremendous team effort. We used every available field player and they all delivered. They worked so hard for this."

The victory keeps Augsburg (10-6-1 overall, 5-4-0 MIAC) in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs, heading into Saturday's (11/2) regular-season finale against St. Thomas at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg would need to beat the Tommies on Saturday, and Saint John's would have to lose in its regular-season finale at Concordia-Moorhead in order for the Auggies to claim the fourth spot in the playoffs.

The Auggies reached the 10-victory mark for the fourth season in a row and the seventh in the last eight seasons under Holker. Augsburg's senior class now has 47 victories (47-21-7) in its career, tied for the second-most wins by a senior class in program history. The senior class of 1977 compiled the most wins in a four-year span in program history, going 49-12-4 from 1973-76. The senior classes of 1978 (47-14-6) and 1979 (47-12-10) also had 47 wins in their careers.

Kordah scored at the 83:38 mark, scoring off a header from Ben Henry (FY, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) following a free kick by Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) for Kordah's first collegiate goal.

"We had taken a little break in the past three games having not scored on any set pieces, so it was appropriate that we concentrated and got the goal tonight from a free kick," Holker said. "Scott's service was right on the money and Ben Henry climbed the ladder to slam the ball back across the goal for Barinedum to tap in. It was a classic Augsburg goal and a great way to open 'B's' scoring account."

Lynch claimed three saves to score his third shutout of the year and 19th of his collegiate career, good for third in school history in the category. Lynch's 29-15-5 career record is now the second-most goalkeeper victories in school history, behind the 37 of Mark Anderson '81 (1977-80).

"Ngochinyan Ollor (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) has to be mentioned for his performance today. He was so good - so fluent," Holker said. "Edi Becerra (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) and Scott Clinton both played very well for us on both sides of the ball. You could really sense their desire to get a win down there (our first at St. Olaf since I have been the coach)."
