Denison's 2 goals rally Auggies past Wildcats

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored two goals in a 3:17 span, rallying her Augsburg College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

With the win, Augsburg remains unbeaten at 8-0-3 overall, 4-0-0 in MIAC play -- the lone MIAC unbeaten team remaining. St. Catherine drops to 5-5-0 overall, 1-3-0 in MIAC play.

Trailing 2-1, Denison struck first at the 69:41 mark, tucking a shot under the goalkeeper off a pass from Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.). At the 72:58 mark, Denison scored her ninth goal of the season, striking a shot from 20 yards out to the top right corner of the goal. Emily Gregg (FY, River Falls, Wis.) and Maris Bolender (FY, Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman HS) received assists on Denison's second goal.

"I was not pleased with the first 55 minutes, but certainly the comeback and quality of soccer we played in the last 35 minutes was impressive," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We showed some grit and skill to get the job done, which we had to have as St. Kate's put forth an outstanding effort."

Despite missing three games due to injury this season, Denison is now in second place among MIAC players in overall statistics in goals scored, with her nine goals second to teammate Olivia Muyres' (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) 13. Augsburg players now occupy three of the top five spots in the MIAC's overall points race, with Muyres first with 32 (13 goals, six assists), Denison third with 19 (nine goals, one assist) and Fitzgerald tied for fourth with 18 (six goals, six assists). Fitzgerald and Muyres are among four players tied for the MIAC lead in assists with six.

Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 10-6 margin in the first half, but the game was scoreless until 4:04 into the second half, when St. Catherine's Elly Leyva (SO, San Jacinto, Calif.) slid a shot from 15 yards out to the right side of the goal, scoring from Julia Zyla (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Trinity School).

After the goal, Augsburg picked up the intensity in an attempt to gain the equalizer, outshooting St. Catherine by a 15-2 margin in the second half, en route to a 25-8 shots advantage in the game. Augsburg also had eight corner kicks to the Wildcats' three.

Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had three saves in goal to pick up the win, while St. Catherine goalkeeper Danielle Mendez (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 10 saves in a losing effort.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Monday (10/7) at 6 p.m., with a rescheduled game against Concordia-Moorhead. The game will be played at St. Cloud State's Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.

"Now we have to regenerate quickly as we have to make up our game vs. Concordia," Navarre said.
