BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Ben Henry (FY, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) scored the lone goal of the game in the 19th minute, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in a nonconference game on Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Henry put home a header in front off an assist by
Bobby Kohl (FY, Shorewood, Wis.) at the 18:14 mark, for his fourth goal of the season.Â
"This was a great game to be a part of. Northwestern provided a stiff test and like all of (Northwestern coach) Greg Wheaton's teams, worked very hard," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "Great goal from Ben on the set piece. He rose to the ball much like
Chad Gilmer used to for us -- he's a treat to watch."
With the win, Augsburg improved to 8-3-1 overall, while Northwestern dropped to 4-8-0 overall.
Nick Lenertz (SO, Newport, Minn./Park HS), in his first start of the season in goal for the Auggies, collected three saves in the first half, with
Andre Fiskum (FY, Bergen, Norway/Holgersens VGS) making four saves in relief in the second half.
"We were able to use some different players in different places and rest a few of our guys with some injuries tonight," Holker said. "A few guys that haven't seen a ton of time did very well with their minutes. I thought
Hussein Abdullahi (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) was sharp in being the conduit in possession.
Festus Lamin (FY, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) did well going 90 minutes and
Aniekan Akpan (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) had one of his better outings on the season.
Joey Decklever (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) looked to be real threatening as well."
Augsburg outshot Northwestern by a 24-13 margin and had several close chances to score in the contest, but Northwestern goalkeeper Shane Coleman (JR, Wyoming, Minn.) came up with five saves -- four in the second half -- to keep the Eagles in the game.
"If there was something to be frustrated with, it was lack of accuracy around the goal," Holker said. "We had 24 shots, but only put six on frame. We really let a half-dozen great chances go to waste, and that won't work on Saturday vs. Carleton. We will have to be extra focused in making our chances count, because against such a fantastic program, they will come few and far between."
Augsburg has three straight games at Edor Nelson Field in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, starting on Saturday (10/12) at 7 p.m., as the Auggies host Carleton.
