Auggies stay unbeaten with OT win over Falcons

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 3:59 mark of overtime, as his Augsburg College men's hockey team completed a comeback for a 3-2, overtime victory over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a nonconference contest on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Augsburg remained unbeaten at 5-0-1 overall, rallying from a 2-0, second-period deficit to the Falcons (2-1-1 overall). Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) had a goal and an assist for the Auggies, with Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scoring the other Auggie goal in the contest.

"To come back from two down against a quality team like River Falls showed our belief in sticking to our game, and to win it in OT was a nice reward for our determination," said Augsburg coach Chris Brown. "That was an excellent college hockey game both ways, and with very little special teams it was like a boxing match ... both teams giving and taking punches. Although they had a size advantage, our team showed it can be effective in a rugged-type game, which is important as the season moves along."

UW-River Falls took a 2-0 lead behnd a first-period goal by Mike Fazio (FY, Bartlet, Ill.), assisted by Cory Lushanko (FY, Chisago City, Minn.) and Alec Hagaman (SR, Peoria, Ill.), and a goal 73 seconds into the second period by Willie Hess (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn.), assisted by Blake Huppert (JR, Wasilla, Alaska) and Ryan Doner (FY, Mukilteo, Wash.).

Augsburg began its comeback midway through the second period, as Ohnsted scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Lucas Hendrickson (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and George Jackson (JR, Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS). Thirty-four seconds into the second period, Krieger tied the game for the Auggies with his second goal of the season, assisted by Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Drew Allen (SO, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS).

Widing scored the game-winning goal with 1:01 remaining in overtime, assisted by Ohnsted. Widing is currently tied for the most goals among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall statistics with five, and his six points are tied for third-most among MIAC players in overall statistics.

Augsburg's scoring has been a story of balance, up and down the lineup, early this season. In its first six games, 18 different Auggies have at least a goal or assist.

Augsburg was outshot for the first time this season, as the Falcons held a 28-26 advantage in shots on-goal. John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had 26 saves for Augsburg, while Scott Lewan (SR, Westland, Mich.) had 23 saves for UW-River Falls.

Augsburg has a pair of nonconference games next weekend against Northland (Wis.) at Ed Saugestad Rink. Next Friday's (11/22) game is at 7:05 p.m., and next Saturday's (11/23) game is at 3 p.m.

"Winning two games this weekend was our mindset going in, and to win two tight games against quality teams was big for our team in the big picture, but we are not going to get ahead of ourselves this early in the season. Just keep getting better every week," Brown said.
