BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Ben Henry (FY, Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln HS) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 76th minute, but it wasn't enough to rally his Augsburg College men's soccer team all the way back in a 3-1 loss to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Scott Clinton (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) popped the ball forward to Henry, who eluded the defense to score for Augsburg (10-7-1 overall, 5-5-0 MIAC) at the 75:53 mark of the contest. Henry closed his debut season for the Auggies with team highs in both goals (six) and total points (14).
"
Ben Henry was a force all night, he was good holding the ball back to goal, he was good faced up, and he was tremendous in the air. Overall, a fitting conclusion to his first season as an Auggie," said Augsburg coach
Greg Holker. "We had good wing play from
Grant Griffin (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and
Joey Decklever (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), and I thought Scott (Clinton) and
Edi Becerra (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) created some good moments in the middle of the park as well."
Mark Smith (SR, Brookfield, Wis./Marquette HS) scored a pair of first-half goals for St. Thomas (10-4-4 overall, 4-3-3 MIAC), on a feed from Nick Rapisarda (SO, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) at the 8:00 mark of play, and on a penalty kick at the 34:28 mark. Ryan Bernhardt (SO, Madison, Wis./West HS) capped the scoring for the Tommies with a goal at the 69:45 mark, assisted by Rapisarda.
"It was a great MIAC soccer game. Both teams played hard and left it out there with no postseason implications on the line. I am extremely proud of this group, and I am even more excited for the future of this program," Holker said. "On the night, I thought we were unfortunate with the scoreline. We are accountable for it, though, because we made silly errors in the back with the ball that led to their goals. They pounced on both of our turnovers with pace and desire. Aside from those moments, I thought we were very good. We pinned them back the entire second half, but just couldn't find the back of the net."
Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 19-11 margin, including a 12-3 advantage in the second half.
Clayton Lynch (SR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had three saves in goal for Augsburg, while Trent Bielke (FY, Appleton, Wis./North HS) had four saves for St. Thomas.
The game closed the collegiate careers for three Augsburg seniors -- Lynch,
Lekpea Kordah (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and
Danny Osip (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). The senior class finished their careers with a 47-22-7 record -- tied for the second-most wins for a senior class in Augsburg history. Along the way, the Auggies appeared in the MIAC postseason playoffs in 2010 and 2011, won the 2010 MIAC playoff championship and advanced to the 2010 NCAA Division III national tournament.
An All-MIAC goalkeeper in 2012, Lynch closed his career with the second-most wins for a goalkeeper in school history (29-16-5), 19 shutouts (third in school history), a .630 winning percentage (third in school history) and a 0.94 goals-against-average (fifth in school history). Osip appeared in 44 games as an Auggie, with four goals and five assists for 13 career points, including two game-winning goals. Kordah played his final two collegiate seasons at Augsburg, appearing in 34 games with seven goals and three assists for 17 career points, including three game-winning goals.Â
"This senior class finishes with the second-most wins in Augsburg history with 47. They played in two MIAC playoffs, won a playoff championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. That's an incredible testament to these guys and their work and how this program has grown because of them. I will miss all three of them immensely," Holker said.
