Auggies edged 4-3 at St. Catherine

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) claimed her first collegiate multi-point night with a goal and an assist for Augsburg College in the Auggies' 4-3 loss to St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday evening at Drake Arena.

Naasz assisted on the Auggies' opening goal and added an unassisted, shorthanded goal early in the third period for Augsburg (1-4-0 overall, 0-3-0 MIAC). Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) also scored goals for the Auggies.

Bailey Rasmussen scored two power-play goals in the second period to lead St. Catherine (3-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 MIAC), which also received first-period goals from Zoe Verkerke and Jordan Solheim.

Kloncz put the Auggies on the scoreboard with her first collegiate goal, assisted by Naasz, at the 3:43 mark of the first period. But St. Catherine answered with a goal by Verkerke, assisted by Annie Buttermore, at the 5:06 mark of the opening frame. St. Catherine went ahead on Solheim's goal, assisted by Hannah Okerstrom, at the 16:24 mark.

The Auggies tied the game at the 3:10 mark of the second period, as Fuechtmann scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS). But St. Catherine went ahead with goals on back-to-back power plays, with Rasmussen scoring from Megan Kilmer at the 11:05 mark and from Kilmer and Randi Fabsits at the 12:38 mark. Naasz scored a shorthanded goal, her second tally of the season, at the 1:42 mark of the third period for the Auggies.

St. Catherine outshot Augsburg by a 34-27 margin, incluidng a 28-15 margin over the last two periods. Kristine Fonti (SO, Rothschild, Wis./Wausau West HS) made her first collegiate start in goal for the Auggies and had 30 saves, while Samantha Geissler had 24 saves in goal for St. Catherine.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/23) at 7:30 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
