BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- A day after his younger brother had a five-point night, Augsburg College's
B.J. McClellan (SR, Cottage grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had a three-point performance with two power-play goals and an assist, leading the Auggies in a 7-3 men's hockey nonconference win over Northland College on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) scored a goal and added two assists for Augsburg, which remained unbeaten at 7-0-1 overall. The Auggies outscored Northland (1-8-0 overall) by a 16-5 margin on the weekend. Augsburg had three power-play goals in Saturday's game, going 3-for-4 with the extra skater.
Eleven different Auggies figured in the scoring in Saturday's victory. On the weekend, 16 Auggies figured in the scoring.
Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and
Drew Allen (SO, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) had a goal and assist each for the Auggies, and
Erik Ordahl (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and
Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scored the other Auggie goals.Â
Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), who scored four goals and had an assist in Friday's 9-2 win, added two more assists on Saturday to finish with a seven-point weekend.
Lucas Hendrickson (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS),
Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS),
Dylan Meier (FY, Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) and
Will Barber (FY, Thorton, Colo./Chaparral HS) also had assists for the Auggies.
The Auggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in a 1:16 span in the first period, with Student scoring from both McClellans, and Ordahl scoring from Meier. Northland scored at the 16:34 mark of the first period, with Louis Labbe (SR, Quebec City, Quebec) scoring from Mike Lennon (SR, Reedsburg, Wis.) and Colin Moberly (SR, Ely, Minn.), but
B.J. McClellan gave the Auggies a 3-1 lead with a power-play goal from
Ben McClellan and Student with 53 seconds left in the opening frame.
Brett Matthews (FY, Missoula, Mont.) scored an unassisted goal for Northland at the 7:48 mark of the second period, but Augsburg answered with an unassisted goal by Allen 1:15 later. The Auggies added three more goals in the final 6:40 of the period, with Almstrom scoring a power-play goal from Hendrickson and Barber, Krieger scoring from Allen and Almstrom, and
B.J. McClellan scoring his second power-play goal of the game from Widing and Student.
The Lumberjacks finished the scoring with a goal from Moberly, assisted by Matt Lennon (JR, Reedsburg, Wis.) and Anthony Stempin (FY, Livonia, Mich.), at the 16:04 mark of the third period.
Augsburg outshot Northland by a 41-22 margin -- collecting a 104-38 shots-on-goal advantage on the weekend.
Matthew Bartels (FY, Sun City, Calif./Winston Churchill (Ore.) HS) had 19 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Mason Riley (SO, Turnersville, N.J.) had 34 saves for Northland.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break with a series against Saint John's. The Auggies host the Johnnies on Dec. 6 at 7:05 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and finish the series at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn., on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
