BOXSCORE ROSEVILLE, Minn. -- The Augsburg College women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack and a strong defensive performance to top Northwestern University (Minn.) 55-42 in nonconference action on Saturday afternoon at the Ericksen Center. With the win Augsburg move to 2-0 overall, while the Auggies hand Northwestern their first loss of the season as the Eagles fall to 3-1 overall.
Northwestern led for the majority of the opening 10 minutes but Augsburg outscored the Eagles 16-1 over the final nine minutes of the half and took a 31-17 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Auggies stretched their lead to as many as 23 in the second-half before cruizing on to the 55-42 win.
Augsburg was led by
Abbey Luger (JR, Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS), who posted a team-high nine rebounds, while adding eight points, four steals and an assist.
Jill Tichy (SR, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson HS) recorded team-highs with nine points apiece. Fitzgerald added seven rebounds to her stat line, six of which were offensive, while Tichy added a pair of boards and an assist. Overall, 10 different Auggies saw action in the contest and eight figured into the scoring.
Northwestern was led by Jessica Fife (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), who finished with a game-high 18 points, which included a perfect 10-of-10 performance from the free throw line.
For the game, Augsburg shot 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the field, while Eagles were only able to connect on 30.0 percent (12-of-40) of their shots. Northwestern claimed a narrow 40-39 advantage on the boards but Augsburg was able to force 30 Northwestern turnovers, while only committing 10.
Augsburg is idle over the Thanksgiving break and returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4, opening conference play against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival St. Thomas. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
