Hennessy's 2 goals lead Auggies to series split

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Rachel Hennessy (JR, Williston, N.D.) scored two second-period goals in a 3:21 span, giving Augsburg College a lead it would not relinquish en route to a 5-1 win over St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Kayla Fuechtmann (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS), Danielle Heitkamp (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Claire Cripps (SO, Hutchinson, Minn.) also scored goals for Augsburg (2-4-0 overall, 1-3-0 MIAC), which claimed a split of the weekend series with St. Catherine (3-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC).

Augsburg was outshot by a 28-17 margin in the game, but Auggie goalie Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) came up with 27 saves -- stopping all 23 shots she faced in the second and third periods -- to claim the victory. Alex Hall (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) had 12 saves in goal for St. Catherine.

The Auggies opened the scoring at the 14:37 mark of the first period, when Fuechtmann scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS). But the Wildcats tied the game 1:38 later, as Bailey Rasmussen (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored her sixth goal of the season, a power-play marker from Megan Killmer (JR, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS).

Augsburg took the lead back when Hennessy scored her two goals early in the second period -- a power-play goal from Darby Lindgren (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) at the 2:22 mark, and an even-strength goal from Kendall Christian (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) at the 5:43 mark. The goals were Hennessy's first two of the season, giving her 33 goals in 56 career games as an Auggie.

Heitkamp scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Ellie Schaaf (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), at the 4:52 mark of the third period, and Cripps capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining in the game.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play after the Thanksgiving break, taking on Saint Benedict in a two-game series. The Auggies face the Blazers at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn., on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., and host the Blazers at Ed Saugestad Rink on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
