Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored the game-winning goal 2:12 into overtime, giving Augsburg College a 2-1 win over host Bethel University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the Schwan's SuperRink.
For the second night in a row, Augsburg (3-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 MIAC) claimed a shots on-goal advantage over Bethel (0-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 MIAC), with a 30-22 margin. But McClellan's goal, assisted by
Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS), kept the Auggies from having to play a shootout for the second straight night. The goal was McClellan's third of the season.
Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS) opened the game with his third goal of the season, also assisted by Ohnsted, at the 2:37 mark of the second period. But Bethel tied the game at the 11:56 mark, with Travis Payne scoring from Jack McFarlane and Colin Mayer.
In its first four games this season, Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 14-7 margin, while claiming a 142-87 shots on-goal advantage.
John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) improved to 3-0-1 overall in goal, collecting 21 saves. On the season, Bretzman now has a 1.70 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage. Dan Harper had 28 saves in goal for Bethel.
Augsburg returns to action with five straight home games at Ed Saugestad Rink, starting next weekend with a series of nonconference games against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes. Next Friday (11/15) at 7:05 p.m., the Auggies host Wisconsin-Stout, and next Saturday (11/16) at 7:30 p.m., the Auggies host Wisconsin-River Falls.
