Strong shooting lifts Auggies to win in Florida

BOXSCORE FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.) led all players with 26 points, while teammate Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) claimed his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds, as the Augsburg College men's basketball team scored a 73-66 win over Wartburg College in a Cruzin Classic tournament game on Friday at Nova Southeastern University's Don Taft University Center.

Augsburg (5-3 overall) used its strongest shooting effort of the season -- a 56.3-percent (27-of-48) effort from the field -- to pull away from Wartburg (4-5 overall). The 56.3-percent shooting effort, a season high, marked Augsburg's third game of the season shooting 50 percent or better from the field. Augsburg also connected on a season-best 10 three-pointers in the game.

Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) connected on four 3-pointers and scored 19 points, adding three assists, four rebounds and a steal. Veach collected his third 20-plus-point effort of the season, while adding five rebounds and three assists. It marked Veach's fifth game of the season with five or more rebounds, and his fourth game with three or more assists.

Kornbaum claimed his 10th double-double in his 36 games as an Auggie over the past two seasons. In addition to his 21 points and 10 rebounds, he added four assists, two blocked shots and a steal. The trio of Veach, Seidlitz and Kornbaum combined for 66 of Augsburg's 73 points in the game.

Meanwhile, Augsburg's defense held Wartburg to a 40.0-percent (24-of-60) effort from the field, the second-lowest shooting percentage by an Auggie opponent so far this season. Augsburg outrebounded Wartburg by a 33-31 margin.

An 11-0 run over a 3:56 span, with Veach scoring seven points in the span, gave Augsburg an early 13-4 lead with 14:25 left in the first half. Augsburg extended its lead to 11 points, before the Knights used an 11-0 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 8:45 left in the frame. Neither team led by more than six points the remainder of the half, with Augsburg taking a 42-39 lead into the locker room.

Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, Augsburg again extended the lead to double digits, with a 59-48 advantage with 9:55 left. Wartburg trimmed the advantage to three points, 65-62 with 3:49 left, but Augsburg scored the next seven points -- back-to-back buckets by Kornbaum and a three-pointer by Dave Weber (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) with 1:11 left -- to give the Auggies the lead to stay.

Wartburg was led by Thomas Perkins, who scored 20 points with six rebounds and two assists. Dan Van Groningen scored 11 points, and Jordan Cannon and Taylor Jacobsmeier scored nine points each.

Augsburg closes its trip to Florida on Saturday (12/21) at 3 p.m. Central time, facing Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Don Taft University Center.
