BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team fell 71-53 to the University of St. Thomas in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season-opener for both squads. With the win, the Tommies move to 3-1 overall (1-0 MIAC), while the Auggies were handed their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 overall (0-1 MIAC).
Augsburg was led offensively by
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), who posted 19 points and three rebounds while adding an assist. Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies were
Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) and
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Kornbaum finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Seidlitz finished with 13 points and five boards.
St. Thomas, who is ranked No. 15 in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, finished with four players in double figures, led by Marcus Alipate (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who posted a game-high 22 points, which included a 5-for-8 night from beyond the arc.
For the game, Augsburg was held to a season-low 37.5 percent from the floor, while St. Thomas was able to hit 58.5 percent of its shots. The Auggies claimed a narrow advantage in the turnover battle, forcing 13, while only committing 11, while the Tommies claimed a 28-23 advantage on the boards. The big difference in the game came from beyond the arc where St. Thomas was able to hit 10-of-19, while Augsburg was only able to convert 3-of-13.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 7 when it hosts a men's and women's doubleheader against St. Olaf College. Women's action is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. while the men tip off at 3 p.m. The Tommies return to action on Monday, Dec. 9 when they make the short trip up Summit Avenue to take on Macalester College.
