Carl Krieger (SO, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) scored two first-period goals, giving the Augsburg College men's hockey team a lead it would not relinquish in a 3-1 triumph over Saint John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) added his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the second period, as Augsburg remained unbeaten at 8-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 in MIAC play, with the victory over the Johnnies (4-5-0 overall, 2-3-0 MIAC).
Through Friday's play, Augsburg remains as one of only five NCAA Division III men's hockey teams that are still unbeaten. Adrian (Mich.) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point are 9-0-0 overall, while top-ranked Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) is 9-0-1 and Williams (Mass.) is 4-0-2. Augsburg enters this weekend's play ranked No. 15 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll, while ranked No. 14 in the D3hockey.com national poll.
Krieger opened the scoring with a goal from a sharp angle at the 9:30 mark of the first period, assisted by
Drew Allen (SO, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) and
Niklas Almstrom (SR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS). His second goal of the game, and sixth of the season, came on the power play at the 16:01 mark of the opening frame, assisted by
Lucas Hendrickson (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and
Zach Dick (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.).
McClellan claimed his eighth goal of the season at the 9:10 mark of the second period, assisted by
Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS) and
Nicholas Widing (JR, Somerset, Wis./Hill-Murray HS). In the MIAC's overall statistics, McClellan is now tied for the conference's lead in goals, while standing fourth among league players in total points (11). Teammate Widing currently stands tied for second in the conference points race with 12 (five goals, seven assists).
The Johnnies got on the scoreboard at the 8:29 mark of the third period, when Josh Gross (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored a power-play goal from John Haeg (JR, Lakeville, Minn.).
Augsburg outshot Saint John's by a 22-19 margin, including a 19-10 edge through the first two periods.
John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) improved to 6-0-1 on the season with an 18-save effort in goal for the Auggies, while Saxton Soley (SO, Elk Mound, Wis.) had 19 saves for Saint John's.
The teams complete the weekend series on Saturday (12/7) at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
