Auggies drop 4-1 decision at Saint Benedict

BOXSCORE ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Claire Cripps (SO, Hutchinson, Minn.) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg College in the first period, but the Auggies dropped a 4-1 decision to the host College of Saint Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey contest on Friday evening at the Municipal Athletic Complex.

Cripps scored an unassisted goal at the 14:28 mark of the first period to tie the game for Augsburg (2-5-0 overall, 1-4-0 MIAC) at 1-1 with Saint Benedict (3-5-0 overall, 1-4-0 MIAC). But the Blazers scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and added two more in the third to claim the 4-1 win.

Christine Brodersen had a goal and two assists for Saint Benedict, while Ally Nielsen and Maddie Rainey had a goal and assist each. Megan Brettingen had the other Blazer goal in the contest.

Brodersen opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Rainey at the 8:44 mark of the first period, but Cripps scored her unassisted goal to tie the game at the 14:28 mark. Nielsen gave the Blazers the lead with a goal from Stephanie Kirk and Brodersen at the 18:50 mark of the second period.

Brettingen scored an unassisted goal for Saint Benedict at the 2:43 mark of the third period, and Rainey capped the scoring with a power-play marker from Nielsen and Brodersen at the 17:16 mark.

Saint Benedict outshot Augsburg by a 40-18 margin in the game. Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had 36 saves in goal for the Auggies, while Jenna Traut had 17 saves for the Blazers.

Brenna Nakonechny (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Red River HS) and Kendall Christian (JR, Moorhead, Minn.) had three shots on-goal each for Augsburg.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/7) at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
