Augsburg unbeaten streak snapped at Saint John's

BOXSCORE ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's hockey team had its nine-game unbeaten streak to start the season snapped by Saint John's University on Saturday night, as the Johnnies scored a 5-0 win over the Auggies in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at the National Hockey Center.

Saint John's (5-5-0 overall, 3-3-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg (8-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 MIAC) by a 36-25 margin in the game -- a 29-14 advantage through the first two periods of play. Alex Ach scored two goals for the Johnnies, with Jason Johnson, Phil Johnson and Josh Gross adding the other Saint John's goals.

John Bretzman (JR, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) collected 31 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Saxton Soley stopped all 25 shots he faced in goal for the Johnnies.

Jason Johnson put the Johnnies on the board with an unassisted goal at the 5:30 mark of the first period. The Johnnies scored three goals in the second frame -- a shorthanded, unassisted goal by Phil Johnson at the 1:10 mark of the second period, an even-strength goal by Ach, assisted by Trent Johnson, at the 13:48 mark, and a power-play goal by Gross, assisted by Nick Senta and John Haeg, at the 15:11 mark. Ach capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 19:43 mark of the third period.

Mack Ohnsted (SO, Vernon Hills, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson HS), Chris Student (SR, Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) and Ben McClellan (JR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had four shots on-goal apiece for the Auggies.

Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break, and will return to action with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
