BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Four different Augsburg College players scored goals, and goalie
Brianna Schulz (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) stopped all 32 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career, as the Auggies claimed a 4-0 win over the College of Saint Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg (3-5-0 overall, 2-4-0 MIAC) scored two power-play goals in the second period to pull away from Saint Benedict (3-6-0 overall, 1-5-0 MIAC) and collect a split of the weekend series. Augsburg went 2-of-5 on the power play in the game.
Meanwhile, the Auggies killed off all six Saint Benedict power-play situations, including a 5-on-3 situation that lasted 1:46 overlapping the end of the second period and the start of the third period. The Blazers pulled their goalie for the final 26 seconds of the second period to give them a 6-on-3 advantage, but Augsburg was able to close the period with no damage done.
Seven different Auggies figured in the scoring in Saturday's win, with two Auggies --
Karissa Haney (FY, Killarney, Manitoba) and
Kelsey Lyngdal (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) scoring their first collegiate goals. All four Auggie goals were scored by first-year players, with
Ashley Kloncz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and
Kimmy Davis (FY, Niles, Ill./Resurrection College Prep HS) also scoring goals, the second goals of the season for each.
Haney struck first for the Auggies, scoring from
Megan Bergland (SO, Thief River Falls, Minn.) at the 15:10 mark of the first period. Kloncz scored an unassisted goal just 2:25 after Haney's marker, giving the Auggies a 2-0 first-period advantage.
The Auggies scored on their first two power plays of the game, with Lyngdal scoring from
Claire Cripps (SO, Hutchinson, Minn.) and
Callen Naasz (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at the 5:26 mark, and Davis scoring an unassisted goal at the 8:46 mark.
Saint Benedict outshot Augsburg by a 32-23 margin in the game. Schulz's 32-save effort marked the third time she has had 30 or more saves in her seven starts this season. Jenna Traut (JR, St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) had 19 saves in goal for Saint Benedict.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (12/10) at 7 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference game at Ed Saugestad Rink, Augsburg's final game before the holiday break.
